Should you supplement Methionine in poultry nutrition?

Methionine is an important essential amino acid in poultry.

Its benefits can be summarised as:

• assisting in protein synthesis
• preventing oxidative stress in birds’ bodies

Most critical, though, is its counteractive properties in controlling the biochemical consequences of oxidative stress through environmental triggers like heat stress.

Methionine’s impact on poultry (broiler or layer) performance is considerable:

• increase muscle growth
• preservation of meat colouration
• reduction of abdominal fat

…to name a few advantages.

Many studies have remarked on a significantly improved performance from birds feeding on methionine-supplemented feed.

My question is, should every poultry farmer consider Methionine supplements as part of their nutritional program?
