Accuracy: the bedrock of meaningful poultry farm analysis

The value of data analysis is sound direction. And this begins with accurate data collection. “There’s no point reading, if what you’re reading is misleading.”

So much of projecting poultry farming success is based on data:

  • FCR
  • Uniformity

…2 of the most profitable key performance indicators for today’s poultry entrepreneur.

And interestingly enough, have you noticed how the key data point for both of these measures of poultry farming success is bird weight.

Even though we associate bird weight as more with broiler farming success, it’s also a key indicator for layer farming success also.

We see the connection more with broilers, because more body mass largely = more meat. And of course, we get paid for weight of bird.

But with layers, body weight is related to size/quality of eggs laid and the week at which laying begins in the lifecycle of the bird. Both underpin eventual return on investment.

And with this obsession on bird weight, perhaps the more fundamental factor is overlooked.

You see often in highly competitive arenas, where practice and outcome are most apparently highlighted together like sports or finance – the controllables are coveted more than the uncontrollables.

Elite competitors discover at an earlier stage in their development process that: “Whilst the world obssess about the things you cannot control, we obsess about the things that you can – for results.”

And in light of poultry farming outcomes being so dependent on bird weight, the smart poultry entrepreneur admits…

“Whilst I can’t control the weight of the birds…I can control (1) the environment they’re reared in, (2) the inputs they receive, (3) how I weigh the birds.”

And among the three controllable factors, the last one is often at best only an after-thought…

…and sadly, a stumbling stone for many a would-be successful poultry entrepreneur.

From the moment the birds hit the brooder floor as day-old chicks as broilers or hen house as PoL (point of lay) pullets to the moment they are slaughtered, the responsibility for results rests on the grower’s shoulders to weigh the flock.

Tracking weight is directly related to tracking your investment success.

And process of weighing the birds either leads to accuracy or error.

So, one of the most influential, success-dependent operational processes you’ll ever perform on your farm is weighing birds.

Get this right and you can rely on the data.

And with reliable data, you are furnished with the substance of sound analysis for sound decision making.
