“You’ve gotta have that auditing mentality.” – Dr. Scott Gillingham, Poultry Veterinarian – Aviagen.
Auditing poultry
A firm word of instruction for every poultry farmer.
(And not to be taken lightly, from a man whose poultry prowess has demanded of him more client flight miles than most modern-day globetrotting entrepreneurs.)
Scott’s background, track record and journeyman consultant vocational trails, have ingrained in him one virtue above all…
…that he would like to also impress upon you.
Auditing.
Why?
Why auditing?
Doc. Scott’s catch-phrase says it best:
“Wri-dowwn-wad-u-du-a-du-wah-u-wri-dowwn-do-proo-vit.”
And if you can decipher his Canadian drawl quick enough (…my son and I struggled with this one for years – but thankfully this podcast cleared things up for us – listen out for 20mins:21secs – we share the spoils of victory below…)
“Write down what you do; and do what you write down to prove it.” – Dr, Scott Gillingham, Poultry Veterinarian – Aviagen
Herein lies the wisdom of auditing your poultry farming happenings:
Proving.
To many of us, especially those of us adopting academically related pursuits…
…the idea of yet more writing and learning is probably much less than inspiring and laborious sounding.
But if you ask me, the bookwormish work of academia vs. the dynamism of pioneering trendsetters that are the subjects of our decades of study couldn’t be further apart…
…we study the works of people who dared to be different & make radical statements…
…only then for us to become:
- certified to play safe,
- make no differences,
- qualify for credit,
- live a borrowed lifestyle and
- exist in an underwhelmingly cookie-cutter segment of today’s economy
- littered with overinflation most notably in the estimation of self-worth.
Our much-coveted, yet pathetically meaningless higher educational studies, contrarily, follow the works of people who took risks to DO (and not just say) and therefore made a difference.
Often at their own risk of considerable outcasting, shame and financial loss.
They:
Challenged the status quo.
Asked questions.
Perceived answers.
Shifted thinking.
Learned.
Revealed.
Taught.
And their works have outlived them.
(Their original scripts inspired by living, became our breathless texts.)
As trailblazers, sure, they left a heritage of lively-looking threads behind.
Albeit each work – only a thread –Â within the greater tapestry of conversation within their chosen field:
Their advancements add colour and hue to our current realm of understanding.
Although faded by time.
But to be reclaimed, restored, revived, renewed and extended by the next faithful and hopeful to make a difference.
This is the essence and thrust behind Doc. Scott’s motto:
“Write down what you do and do what you write down to prove it.”
Observe.
Ask.
Experiment.
Record.
Analyse.
Conclude.
Answer.
(Prove theory with practice.)
Live.
Do this:
Today, begin a journal of EVERYTHING you do in the planning, running and improving of your poultry project.
Forget stale proformas and tableted frameworks.
Think living documentation of every thought and consideration of heart regarding your endeavour.
Record items of interest daily. In fact, MANY times daily – being critical and taking nothing at face value.
Probe.
Test.
Validate.
Write down what you do and do what you write down to prove it.
This is how you survive…grow and exceed your goals, beyond your expectations and come what may.
Begin this today.
Journal your poultry project…digital (blog)…paper-based (diary)…it doesn’t matter.
Just do.
Now over to you…
Are you considering starting a poultry venture?
Have you already begun, perhaps started a few and grown cynical with failures?
Are you inspired to journal your poultry project?
Either way, I’d be interested to hear from you.
